According to earlier sources, it is believed that the technique of ironing to remove wrinkles from clothes and fabrics was popular among the Chinese. They used pans filled with hot coals and hot metals to iron clothes. During the same time north European people used stones, glass and wood for removing creases from clothes. However, the use of irons dates back to hundreds of years. Earlier these were served as killing parasites and bacteria in clothing apart from smoothing creases. The earlier irons were heavy, difficult to use and was ironing was indeed a laborious job hence, only the wealthy and well-to-do could afford to employ people to iron clothes.

To make ironing easy and simple for people, these were modified and designed to suit the changing lifestyle. Flatiron, a flat piece of it with a metal handle attached on the top to make ironing simple was introduced in Europe in the 1300s. The flatiron was heated by holding it over or in a fire and was used to press garments to remove wrinkles. It was modified during the fifteenth century and was known as the hot box or box iron. Hot coals, slugs and other heating elements were inserted into the iron. The nineteenth century witnessed several innovations in iron technology. Gas irons were introduced in the 1800s and the earliest this was patented in the year 1874.

The problems and hassles faced by people using gas irons led to the invention of electric irons in the 1880s. Henry W. Seeley patented the first electric iron in 1882. The electric iron was powered by electricity. However, Seeley's irons did not live up to its expectation as it heated too slowly and cooled down too quickly. Irons with electric cords attached to it were introduced in 1903. The improvement in iron technology led to the invention of better irons that were not only easy to use but light-weight and convenient.

A modern day iron is a small appliance that is designed in a roughly triangular shape. It comes equipped with several features like auto shut off and many others. Contemporary these are usually made of plastic and designed with a number of holes on the soleplate to allow smooth flow of steam. Since ironing is a common household practice, these are a must-have in every household. Different types of irons are available in the market and online to suit your needs. Dry iron, steam iron and spray iron are common irons that are favoured by people in the 21st century. As ironed clothes give a smart and presentable look, an iron is a common household appliance. However, you should always check the label of the garments before you iron your clothes as each fabric requires different temperature to remove creases and wrinkles. Reading the instructions in the iron box before you use an iron is the first step you need to follow before you iron your clothes.
